The merchant John, a devout Christian, traveled to Belgorod. A Venetian merchant, envious of John's success and faith, plotted against him, falsely accusing him of renouncing Christianity to the city's Tatar governor. John refused to deny Christ, enduring brutal torture. He was dragged behind a horse until his body was torn to pieces. Despite the cruelty, his faith never wavered. His relics were later moved to Suceava, becoming a source of miracles and healing.
