Bishop Bretanion of Tomis, during the reign of Emperor Valens, defied the Arian heresy embraced by the emperor. When Valens visited Tomis, Bretanion refused to greet him or offer communion because of the emperor's heretical beliefs. Valens ordered Bretanion into exile, but the local faithful stood by their bishop. Seeing their devotion, Valens relented and allowed Bretanion to return to his flock.
