Niphon, a monk from Mount Athos, reluctantly accepted the patriarchal throne in Constantinople. Known for his strict asceticism and profound wisdom, he often clashed with the corrupt officials of the Byzantine court. Once, Emperor Andronicus II, angered by Niphon's rebuke of his unjust policies, banished him. Yet, before Niphon departed, he prophesied the empire's downfall if it did not repent. Later, the emperor, plagued by nightmares and unrest, recalled Niphon, begging forgiveness. Niphon, ever the shepherd, returned, continuing to guide his flock with unwavering faith. May his example inspire us to stand firm in truth.
Lord, have mercy!
