In the 14th century, Nicodim, a monk of Slavic origin, established Tismana Monastery in Romania. Guided by divine visions, he selected a secluded cave for prayer. Once, lacking water, Nicodim struck the cave wall with his staff, and a spring gushed forth, still flowing today. He led a life of prayer and fasting, teaching the brethren and adorning the monastery with beautiful icons and sacred vessels.
