On the eve of the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, Iuliu Hossu, a bishop, was arrested. Subjected to relentless pressure, he was offered the Patriarchal seat of the Romanian Orthodox Church in exchange for renouncing his faith and merging the Romanian Church with the Orthodox Church. Iuliu Veteranul refused, choosing imprisonment and suffering rather than betraying his convictions. He died in prison in 1970, a martyr for his unwavering faith.
