Venerable Martyr Gherasim of Tismana, a monk known for his ascetic life, faced a brutal death at the hands of invading Ottoman Turks. When they raided Tismana Monastery in 1690, seeking to plunder its wealth, Gherasim refused to reveal the location of the monastery's hidden treasures. Enraged by his steadfastness, the invaders tortured and beheaded him inside the church. His sacrifice protected the monastery and its community.
