In 1821, during the Greek War of Independence, Gregory IV faced immense pressure from the Ottomans due to the Filiki Eteria's activities in Wallachia. Despite his efforts to maintain peace and protect his flock, he was arrested under false pretenses. Accused of inciting rebellion, he was brutally tortured and hanged at the gate of the Patriarchate in Bucharest on June 22, 1829. His martyrdom solidified his image as a protector of his people.
Lord, may his prayers intercede for peace and understanding among all nations!
