During the reign of the Turkish Sultan Murad, Saint Gherasim lived as a hermit near the Tismana Monastery. Seeking solitude, he later moved to a cave at the foot of the Craiova Mountains. Turkish soldiers, attempting to plunder the monastery, found Gherasim and demanded he reveal the path. Refusing to betray his brethren, he was tortured and beheaded. Before his death, he prayed for the monastery's safety. His sacrifice protected the monks and the holy site from desecration.
