St. John, fleeing invading Tartars, sought refuge near the Jiu River. Unrecognized, he was slain by a soldier seeking riches. The soldier, finding nothing of value, beheaded the saint. Villagers later discovered his body, miraculously preserved and radiating light, near the Prislop Monastery. The relics were moved to the church, becoming a source of healing and miracles for those who prayed with faith.
