In 1821, during the Greek War of Independence, Gregory IV faced immense pressure from the Ottomans due to suspicions of Romanian support for the Greek rebels. Despite his efforts to maintain peace and protect his flock, he was arrested and imprisoned in Bucharest. He was tortured to reveal the names of those aiding the revolt, but he refused to betray his people or compromise his faith. Gregory IV endured the suffering with unwavering faith and courage, eventually dying in captivity.
Lord, grant us strength like Gregory IV to stand firm in our faith during trials.
