Niphon, a monk from Mount Athos, reluctantly accepted the patriarchal throne of Constantinople. His heart yearned for monastic solitude, not worldly power. When Emperor Andronicus II demanded he compromise Church canons, Niphon refused, choosing exile over betraying his faith. He boldly told the Emperor, "It is better for me to suffer than to see the Church suffer." His integrity shone brightly, even as he faced banishment, reminding all of the true cost of discipleship. Let us pray that, like Niphon, we have the courage to prioritize God's will above all else.
