Hieromartyr #Antim the Ivirian, a Georgian by birth, was a skilled calligrapher, woodcarver, and theologian. As Metropolitan of Wallachia, he championed the Romanian language in liturgy and education, establishing the first printing press in Bucharest. His reforms angered powerful boyars, who falsely accused him of treason. In 1716, he was exiled and murdered by drowning in the river.
