Born in Vidin, Bulgaria, Gherasim journeyed to Wallachia, seeking spiritual enlightenment. He entered Tismana Monastery and became a monk. During the Austro-Turkish War, when the Habsburg army raided the monastery seeking riches, Gherasim refused to reveal the location of the hidden treasures. Infuriated, the soldiers tortured and ultimately burned him alive inside the church in 1788.
