Martyr John the New, a merchant of Trebizond, was traveling when he was falsely accused of renouncing Christianity by a Venetian merchant. Brought before the city's ruler in Belgorod, John refused to deny his faith, despite promises of wealth and threats of torture. He was brutally beaten, dragged through the streets, and finally beheaded. His body was then burned, but his heart remained untouched by the flames. Christians recovered his relics, and they became a source of miracles.
