In the late 18th century, as Metropolitan of Țara Românească, Gregory IV faced immense pressure from the Ottoman Empire, which demanded increased taxes from the already impoverished Romanian people. Seeing their suffering, Gregory IV traveled to Constantinople to negotiate directly with the Sultan. He presented a tearful plea, describing the hardships endured by his flock and the crippling effect of the excessive taxes. Impressed by his courage and moved by his compassion, the Sultan agreed to significantly reduce the tax burden, bringing much-needed relief to the Romanian people. Let us pray that the example of #GregoryIV inspires us to defend those in need with boldness and compassion. #OrthodoxChurch #RomanianHistory #Faith #Courage #Prayer
