St. Gherasim lived in quiet contemplation near Tismana Monastery. One day, Hungarian soldiers stormed the monastery, demanding its riches. Gherasim bravely refused to reveal the hiding place of the valuables and was brutally tortured and beheaded. His sacrifice protected the holy place from desecration.
