In the year 304, during Diocletian's persecutions, Bishop Irineu stood firm in his faith in the face of Roman authorities in Sirmium. When pressed to offer sacrifices to pagan gods, he refused outright, declaring his allegiance to Christ. Despite imprisonment and torture, Irineu remained steadfast, his spirit unbroken. He encouraged his flock to remain true to their beliefs, even in the face of death. Ultimately, he was beheaded for his unwavering faith, becoming a martyr for Christ.
