Moldavia stood defiant against the Ottoman Empire because of one man: Stephen the Great. A fierce warrior and devout Christian, he built churches after every victory, thanking God for His aid. After losing a major battle, he sought counsel from a hermit, who told him the defeat was punishment for his illegitimate birth. Stephen publicly performed penance, and with renewed faith, continued to defend his land, becoming a beacon of Christian resistance in Eastern Europe.
