In the 18th century, during Austro-Hungarian rule, Saint Gherasim refused to renounce his Orthodox faith and convert to Catholicism. Soldiers tortured him to force his conversion, but he remained steadfast. Enraged, they beheaded him near Tismana Monastery. His martyrdom strengthened the resolve of local Orthodox Christians.
