Venerable Dimitrie lived as a simple shepherd, dedicated to prayer and helping the needy. He was found dead near the Basarabi village cave. His relics, emitting a sweet fragrance, were moved to a local church. During a Tatar invasion, a paralyzed girl was miraculously healed by touching his coffin, which was thrown into the Danube. The relics floated to Belgrade, where they remained until 1774 when they were offered to Wallachia as gratitude for Romania offering refuge during the Russo-Turkish war, and placed in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Bucharest.
