In 1683, as the Ottoman army besieged Vienna, Prince Apafi forced Metropolitan Sava Brancovici to convene a synod in Alba Iulia. Under duress, the synod agreed to send a letter to the Emperor of Austria, urging him to surrender Vienna to the Turks. Sava, however, secretly dispatched a monk to Vienna, revealing the true intentions behind the letter. When Apafi discovered Sava's betrayal, he imprisoned the Metropolitan in chains for 14 months, subjecting him to harsh treatment for defending the Christian faith.
